The 2017 Grammy nominees were announced today (December 6) and, not surprisingly, music from many of the notable albums from classic rock greats was not among the nominees in the four biggest categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.
In a year that brought us fine new albums by veteran artists such as Santana, The Monkees, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and two icons who passed in 2016, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen, the Album of the Year category instead went to more predictable artists like Beyonce and Adele.
Bowie and his well-received Blackstar album did receive five nominations: Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song (for the title track), Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album-Non-Classical and Best Recording Package.
Two Dylan albums earned two nominations : Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album (for Fallen Angels) and Best Historical Album (for The Cutting Edge: 1965-1966).
Scroll down to see who’s up for the rock-related awards. The 59th annual winners will be announced on the live broadcast on February 12, 2017, on CBS.
