A lovely video tribute to George Martin was posted late Wednesday night (March 9th), one day after the legendary Beatles producer and arranger died at 90.
The 3:35-minute clip features interviews with Ringo Starr, fellow producers Brian Eno, Russ Titelman, Rick Rubin and Tony Visconti, the late record company president Jerry Moss (the “M” to Herb Alpert’s “A” in A&M Records), Martin’s son Giles (himself a producer), Rosanne Cash, as well as Martin himself. The production comes from a series scheduled to premiere in November 2016 on PBS called Soundbreaking: Stories From the Cutting Edge of Recorded Music. Episode One is described as “a study in contrasting styles and approaches: between the inspired guidance of George Martin in his work with The Beatles and Phil Spector’s dictatorial insistence on his signature sound; between the gentle coaxing with which Rick Rubin brought Johnny Cash back to greatness, and the fierce creative independence of artist-producers such as Joni Mitchell and Sly Stone.”
Accompanying the clip on YouTube was the following tribute:
Through the incredible works of art he created with the Beatles, George Martin has touched all of our lives. We are fortunate to have spent the last five years working with George and his son, Giles, on an eight-part documentary series that celebrates the art of music recording.
George was warm and generous and totally unpretentious. In working with him, we caught a few glimpses of how he was able to bring out the best in the Beatles. He believed in us, he inspired us to get the story right, but he never told us how to do it; he asked us instead to trust our instincts. We will miss him.

As the tribute ends, a car driven by Martin rides into the sunset. The screen fades to black:
