David Bromberg, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter considered a father of the “Americana” movement, will release The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues on Red House Records October 14, 2016. Produced by Larry Campbell, a former collaborator of Bob Dylan and Levon Helm, Bromberg’s first album since 2013 consists of classic blues tracks by Robert Johnson, Bobby Charles, George “Little Hat” Jones, Ray Charles, Sonny Boy Williamson and others, in addition to original compositions. (Order it here.)
According to his announcement, Bromberg found his inspiration for the album when he heard Willie Nelson repeat a quote from Texas fiddler Johnny Gimble: “There’s only two kinds of music, the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ and the blues.”
The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues is Bromberg’s 18th album, the latest in a solo career that began in 1971 on his self-titled debut.
Here’s a live version of Bromberg performing “Walkin’ Blues” with Keb Mo from April 3, 2016…

Meanwhile, in other Bromberg news, the U.S. Library of Congress has announced a plan to buy the musician’s collection of 263 American-made violins for $1.5 million. Bromberg told NPR that he began collecting the instruments in the 1960s. The library will exhibit the violins, some of which go back to the 19th century, in a new center on the history of the American violin.
