The leader of postmodern psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips will enjoy the first official gallery showing of his artwork with his immersive installation piece King’s Mouth included in the American Visionary Art Museum’s The Big Hope Show, opening on October 4th. The theme of the show is work by survivors of traumatic experiences who are also self-taught intuitive artists.
Coyne was a victim of an armed robbery in the 1980s while working as a cook at a Long John Silver’s restaurant in his hometown of Oklahoma City.
His talents as a visual artist have been incorporated into the band’s album artwork and multimedia live shows. He has also created two comic books and a science fiction Christmas film.
The AVAM has in the past exhibited art by such other pop culture figures as famed beat writer William S. Burroughs, legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix and underground comics icon R. Crumb. Coyne’s piece will be on display through August 2016.
