The producers of the 2024 Academy Awards held on March 10 have taken a lot of much-deserved heat for the “In Memoriam” segment. It was difficult for TV viewers to read the names and their roles in the film industry, particularly those that weren’t A-List actors. Furthermore, social media was flooded with posts of people complaining that the musicians and dancers in the segment were too prominent and thereby causing the visuals of the deceased to be drastically reduced in size.
The year’s big winner was Oppenheimer, which won seven awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Lead Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.).

Eddie Vedder performed Tom Petty‘s “Room at the Top” for the 2018 Academy Awards “In Memoriam” segment on March 4, 2018. After the Pearl Jam leader opened the number, the screen devoted the entire screen to images and graphics of the Hollywood figures who died in the past year—those in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes—including such legends as Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles, Roger Moore, Chuck Berry, Harry Dean Stanton, Sam Shepard and directors Jonathan Demme and George A. Romero.
“Room at the Top” is from the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 1999 studio album, Echo.
The big winner at the 90th Oscars ceremony was The Shape of Water which won for Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro among its four wins. The top acting awards went to the favorites: Frances McDormand, for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Gary Oldman for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour.

It would have been nice if Tom Petty’s picture were included in that montage.
