A short film looks at the early years of Freddie Mercury’s life including his birthplace of Zanzibar where his father was working for the government, his schooling and first musical endeavours in India and his move to London.
Freddie Mercury – The Early Years was directed by Simon Lupton. The brief film includes interviews with his mother, Jer Bulsara; his sister, Kashmira Cooke; several of his schoolmates, and archival interviews with Mercury himself.
“We used to go to functions and parties,” says his mother. “And he used to sing, whether somebody asked him [to or not].” Watch the film below.
The Bohemian Rhapsody feature film, from Twentieth-Century Fox, premiered on Oct. 23, 2018 in the U.K. and Nov. 2 in the U.S. Bohemian Rhapsody. It stars Rami Malek as Freddie, Gwilym Lee as Brian May, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, Joe Mazzello as John Deacon and Lucy Boynton as Freddie’s lifelong companion Mary Austin. The soundtrack features the original Queen recordings and vocals.

The film has been an enormous success with five Academy Award nominations including Best Picture. Malek won the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Mercury. It earned $904 million at the worldwide box office.
Mercury was born on September 5, 1946 and died November 24, 1991, at age 45.
