Update: Bryan Adams’ Get Up LP is now available and he’s announced an extensive 2016 tour of Europe, North America, Australia, the U.K. and more.
Take one listen to the new Bryan Adams single, “Brand New Day,” and you think, “hit.” The straight-ahead number is somewhat reminiscent of the singer’s “Summer Of ‘69” from a few years ago.
Er, actually that was 1985 when the Canadian classic rocker was a Top 40 and AOR staple. Adams’ run was so good for so long that he achieved no less than 17 Top 15 pop hits over a 14-year span, including “Heaven,” “Run To You” and “Cuts Like A Knife.”
And then something odd happened: though he was still releasing new albums, their singles were essentially ignored by Top 40 radio.
That should change with “Brand New Day,” the first release from Adams’ Get Up album, his 13th studio effort, due October 30th on Ume. Click on the live video below; if you think it sounds vaguely familiar, you’re not alone. Besides the “Summer Of ‘69” comparison, Get Up was produced by ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne.
“It came together quite organically,” Adams explains, “song by song, working with Jeff producing over the past couple of years whenever he had time. It was a great partnership as it gave me plenty of time to write the songs, most of which are with [longtime collaborator] Jim Vallance. We all worked primarily over the Internet from Canada, Europe and LA., sending demos and parts of songs until we got it right.
“In many ways it is the album I wish I’d been able to make 25 years ago.”
These are busy times for Adams. Last Sunday (9/13), he co-headlined (with Rod Stewart) the BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park Festival (watch above video). He’s been on the road seemingly nonstop on his Reckless 30th Anniversary tour, which ends September 25th. As for Get Up, Adams is in great voice and appears to be really enjoying himself on the rockabilly “You Belong To Me.” We can’t wait for the full album (available for pre-order below).
