It’s been 20 years now since Joan Osborne released Relish, her first major label collection of contemporary folk-rock songs, nominated for Album of the Year at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards.
She’s celebrating the occasion with a special re-release of the record, featuring a plethora of bonus tracks – an acoustic version of Eric Bazilian’s “One of Us,” the previously unreleased “Mighty One” and “Here Comes What’s Coming,” as well as four live recordings and assorted other demos.
Now fans can hear the original acoustic demo of “One of Us,” the tune that rose to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, captivating audiences with its simple exploration of faith. Bazilian – founder of the ’80s band The Hooters – says he wrote it to “impress a girl,” who later became his wife, and that it was also one of the quickest numbers he ever composed. He originally included it as a hidden track on his solo album, but his producer friend Rick Chertoff suggested Osborne to take a stab at singing it. It was subsequently nominated for three Grammys.
The 20th anniversary re-release of Relish will be available October 30th on Universal Music Enterprises. Catch Osborne on tour with Mavis Staples through the end of November.
