Several decades ago, Chris Walters wrote music reviews, hundreds in all, at the University of Texas for The Daily Texan, for the commercial daily Austin American-Statesman and for the weekly Austin Chronicle. Happily, most of these pieces are not archived online. Still a resident of the Texas capital despite its decline, he now works for Acres USA, a monthly devoted to sustainable farming and related topics. He remains impressed by the power of popular music to grant access to a supramundane zone of freedom and dispense corn, often within the same song. He believes the 21st century is not going well.
Against most odds and the worst vagaries of the music business, former punks turned roots music collective The Mekons have become beloved by enough fans. The 2013 documentary, Revenge Of The Mekons, is now out on DVD.
