Other than his record-breaking residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Billy Joel performs pretty infrequently. He clearly enjoys doing it; he just doesn’t want the rigors of a full-blown tour.
Since January 2014, Joel, who turned 68 on May 9, has played one show per month at The Garden, an unprecedented run of 40 sold-out shows through April 2017. He averages roughly one other show per month which this year includes dates at no less than eight Major League Baseball stadiums.
Speaking of which… on Saturday night, May 13, made his first appearance at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The Piano Man often has a surprise guest or two perform at his concerts. In April, for instance, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts joined him for two songs. The LA gig was no exception. First, Pink joined him for two songs including “New York State of Mind.”

Five songs later, he brought on “a friend of mine… please welcome Axl Rose.” The band then broke into the familiar chords of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” with Joel even strapping on a guitar.
Later, Rose returned midway through the five-song encore to join Joel in singing “Big Shot.”
Rose begins Guns N’ Roses’ “Not in This Lifetime” tour on May 27 in Europe and the U.K. through July 15. North American dates begin July 27, followed by South America on September 23.
