Well before the legendary music festival took its name from the charming Hudson Valley village, Woodstock, NY was known as the Colony of the Arts. A Who’s Who of not just musicians but many artists and bohemians have made their home in the charming village in the hills for decades.
But that’s a whole other story.
On Aug. 29, 2015, the crowds came out to opening night for the Legends at Large photo exhibit at Fletcher Gallery with three of the four presenting photographers in attendance. Best Classic Bands friend (and official photographer of the ’69 Woodstock Festival) Elliott Landy was there with nearly 30 of his works displayed, including shots of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Band and Frank Zappa.
Though not in attendance, famed rock lensman Joel Bernstein was represented with iconic images of Springsteen, CSN and more. Actress-writer and photographer Amy Grantham was there, too. No wonder, because she’s now married to…
The star of the evening, photographer Graham Nash, is fairly well known for some of his other interests. His photos of candid moments with Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Jerry Garcia and various members of CSN&Y were on display at the exhibition.
Woodstock is an easy 100-mile drive from New York City up the NY State Thruway. And then a lovely winding country road drive up into the Catskills Mountains. You can even make it a rock music weekend and stay in the nearby house known as Big Pink.
