His 70th birthday just passed on Feb. 3, and Dave Davies, former (and perhaps future?) lead guitarist of The Kinks, sure shows no signs of slowing down. The man who invented some of the greatest riffs in rock—is there one more classic than “You Really Got Me”?—and the writer and vocalist on some of the band’s most memorable songs (“Death of a Clown,” “This Man He Weeps Tonight”), has a full plate in front of him for this year.
On March 31, Davies will release a new album, a collaboration with his son Russ Davies titled Open Road. No information has yet been released about the track listing or other personnel. The album will be distributed by Red River Entertainment. It’ll be Dave Davies’ first new release since 2014’s Rippin’ Up Time and the 2015 companion piece Rippin’ Up New York City—Live at the City Winery.
Davies will appear, along with several other rock and R&B greats, on Rock ’N’ Roll Inventions, a six-episode weekly series kicking off at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, Jan. 16 on the Smithsonian Channel.
He also has an American tour set for the spring, beginning April 6 in Milwaukee and winding up with a two-nighter at Nashville’s City Winery on April 30-May 1. He’ll also play two nights at the New York branch of the winery/venue and one at its Atlanta room. Davies’ full tour schedule is below.

Lastly, for those wondering, yes, there may be a Kinks reunion yet—and then again, maybe not. Davies told Billboard magazine that he and his brother Ray, who has his own new album, Americana, due out soon, have been writing songs together. “I think it’s going to be a very interesting year for both of us—and the Kinks,” Davies told the publication. “It’s difficult sometimes. I’ve given up wanting to even try and analyze it. If it happens, it happens. It’s just one of those unknowables. But just the fact that we get together and try it has got to be good, right?”
