Grateful Dead singer/guitarist Bob Weir and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart aren’t quite done with the band’s legacy after the five sold-our Fare Thee Well shows earlier this summer. They will join forces with guitarist, singer and songwriter John Mayer as Dead & Company on a tour that now begins in Albany on October 29th. The road trip continues on Halloween night, October 31st, and November 1st at Madison Square Garden.
“Those songs weren’t done with us,” Weir told Billboard magazine in August. “It was a matter of who wanted to get back out on the road and keep doing it.” Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh will return to working with his band Phil and Friends. Other players on the tour are keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, who performed on the Fare Thee Well shows, and former Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge.
Mayer is a recent convert to Grateful Dead fandom after hearing the band’d 1980 song “Althea” on Pandora in 2011. He’s been jamming with members of the band since late spring. But the decision to pursue this tour wasn’t finalized until after the Fare Thee Well shows, all five of which Mayer attended.
“All the pieces just fell together magically,” noted Hart. “There was a kind of serendipity there — when you’re not actually looking for anything and then all of a sudden, it all appears.”
