The Eagles returned to the concert stage on Saturday night (July 29, 2017) for the second time in two weeks—albeit with a significantly altered lineup of family and friends—at New York’s Citi Field, as the first night headliner for another festival-like appearance billed as the Classic.
Glenn Frey’s death in January 2016 was followed shortly thereafter by Don Henley’s (premature) announcement that the classic rock greats were finished as a band.
[The Eagles had such a good time at their July 15 Classic West performance at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, that they added another concert with the Doobie Brothers, Classic Northwest.]
The Eagles’ Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh were joined for their performance by Frey’s 24-year-old son, Deacon, and by country star Vince Gill, each of whom sang lead vocals on some of Frey’s well known hits.
Frey and his son had performed together on occasion. Watch a clip of them onstage in 2010
Saturday night’s 24-song set of fan favorites was identical to the July 15 show with one bonus, as they added “New York Minute.”
As with their Los Angeles concert, it didn’t take young Frey to get his feet wet as he sang lead on the evening’s second song, the group’s 1972 breakthrough hit, “Take it Easy.”
[The Eagles are among the handful of acts that remove material from YouTube faster than a newly married couple’s clothes on their wedding night. Since this story was published, all of the videos featured were taken down.]
