The return of The Eagles—with Deacon Frey (son of the late Glenn) and country star Vince Gill now firmly integrated into the lineup—kicked into high gear last night (Sept. 30) with a full, 23-song set at Seattle’s Safeco Field. The show was billed as Classic Northwest, which also featured the Doobie Brothers. (Classic Northwest follows this summer’s similar Classic West and East concerts in L.A. and New York, respectively. Those shows also featured Steely Dan, whose Walter Becker has since passed away.)
The Eagles’ Seattle gig precedes five “An Evening With the Eagles” shows set for October in North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Michigan. The band opened last night’s set with “Seven Bridges Road,” the Steve Young-authored song that first appeared on their 1980 Eagles Live album. It was followed by “Take it Easy,” co-written by Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne. Here it was sung by 24-year-old Deacon Frey, who, along with Gill, first replaced the late co-founder at the two high-profile summer dates. Both Deacon and Gill took lead vocals throughout the night on songs previously sung by Glenn Frey.

The Classic Northwest set was loaded with hits, among them “Take It to the Limit” (one of several sung by Gill), “Witchy Woman,” “Best of My Love,” “Life in the Fast Lane” and many more. Eagles mainstays Timothy B. Schmit, Don Henley and Joe Walsh rounded up the lineup, with Walsh featured on his own “Life’s Been Good” and “Funk #49” (his James Gang classic) toward the end of the show.
The band returned for two encores: first, “Hotel California” and then, after leaving the stage and returning, “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Desperado.”
