The King would’ve turned 81 this coming January 8th. 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the superstar’s breakout year in music, film and TV – 1956, the year he released his second studio album, Elvis, placed 17 different songs on Billboard‘s Top 100 singles chart, appeared on prime-time network variety shows 11 times, and appeared in his first feature film, Love Me Tender. Elvis fans from all over the world will be traveling to Graceland next month to celebrate the classic rocker’s birthday and kick off a year-long celebration of his banner year , with birthday festivities beginning Thursday, January 7th and running through Sunday, January 10th.
A new exhibit called “Elvis in Hollywood: From Teen Idol to Leading Man,” will open for tours, highlighting Elvis’s time on the silver screen and showcasing various artifacts from his wardrobe, personal scripts and notes, rare behind-the-scenes photos and more. Fans can even bid on prized pieces of Elvis history, like the 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove guitar the performer played at legendary shows like the Aloha From Hawaii concert in 1973. Elvis’s annual Birthday Proclamation Ceremony will take place Friday morning, January 8th, and will also be available to far-off fans via livestream and Elvis Radio on SiriusXM Channel 19.
