Due to the broken leg Dave Grohl sustained after falling off a stage in Gothenburg, Sweden (and then finishing the show after being treated by medics; see our initial report here), the Foo Fighters have cancelled their remaining four European concerts: two nights at London’s Wembley Stadium (6/19 & 20), shows in Edinburgh, Scotland (6/23) and Werchter, Belgium (6/25), and a headlining appearance at the famed Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. (6/26).
After receiving x-rays following the Gothenburg show that confirmed a broken fibula, the band cancelled dates at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands (6/14) and St. Gallen, Switzerland (6/16). Grohl flew to London for further x-rays and an MRI followed by an operation on Monday (6/15) in which a plate held in place by six screws was attached to the bone.
He posted a personal message on the band’s website (read it here) that recounted the Gothenburg injury with good humor. “I made a mad dash to the right of the stage during MONKEY WRENCH to shred some tasty licks for the kids up front. It was a beautiful night, beautiful stadium, 52,000 screaming people….dream gig! Well….wait for it….I definitely shredded something (ZING!) Wound up feet first over the Edge (pun intended), dropping about 12 feet, dislocating my ankle and snapping my fibula like an old pair of take out chopsticks. Whoopsie daisy. Not good. Without realizing the extent of my injuries, I stood up to get back onstage and crumbled like a sack of Joe Theismanns (look it up, kiddies). That shit was B-R-O-K-E.”
And also explained: “My doctors have advised me to lay low for a while. The most important thing now is for me to recover from the surgery, to keep my leg elevated so as to keep swelling down and prevent any infection/complication that could do long term damage.”
Foo Fighters are scheduled to begin an American tour on July 4 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium that runs through October 18, followed by further dates in Europe in November. But as Grohl notes, “I’m not out of the woods yet, folks…” A statement from the band’s publicist notes, “Dave’s full recuperation time is still to be determined.”
