When Joe Walsh turned 72 on Nov. 20, 2019, from the looks of a photograph shared by Ringo Starr, the classic rock legend enjoyed a memorable evening with friends.
Ringo, Walsh’s brother-in-law by marriage – the pair are married to sisters Barbara Bach and Marjorie Bach – tweeted a photo two days’ later of Walsh beaming while eating a piece of chocolate cake. The caption read, in part: “Happy birthday Joe that was the best dinner party we’ve been to all day.”
Seated next to Walsh? None other than Jeff Lynne, who himself turned 72 a month later, on Dec. 30. (Starr had turned 79 the previous July 7.)
Some of the comments on Starr’s tweet were pretty humorous. @LivMeDo asked, “who’s joe?” and was quickly educated by others in the tweeterverse. @SamFowler69Reds offered to host the group at a subsequent gathering. “The best dinner parties are at my house and all are welcomed. Feel free to stop by on the second Tuesday of the week,” he tweeted.

All three stars had busy years planned. Ringo had announced the 2020 edition of his All Starr Band, with a North American tour scheduled, though it was delayed until 2022 because of the pandemic. A few weeks before the birthday soiree he released a studio album, What’s My Name, that featured a little help from his friends Walsh, Paul McCartney, and many others. Lynne released his first studio album since 2015, From Out of Nowhere, on Nov. 1.
As for Walsh, he performed his third annual VetsAid benefit concert with guests ZZ Top, Sheryl Crow, the Doobie Brothers, and others, ten days’ earlier, on Nov. 10. (Lynne performed his first set in four years at the 2023 edition of VetsAid.) Walsh expected to join his Eagles bandmates for a 2020 tour to perform their Hotel California album with a full orchestra, though that, too, was delayed until 2021.
Before the birthday dinner, Walsh posted: “Thank you for all of the birthday wishes! Life’s been good.”
