Yes, you read that right. The great Sir Paul McCartney is indeed joining the star-studded cast of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, for a top-secret cameo appearance. The blockbuster movie is currently in post-production, and McCartney’s part is reportedly an extra bit that the filmmakers will be adding to an action scene that they have already filmed. (He’s listed in the cast credits without the name of his character.)
As you may recall, The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards played Captain Jack Sparrow’s father, Captain Teague, in the past two Pirates flicks, so it seems only fitting that fellow classic rocker McCartney would make an appearance. (Johnny Depp has also frequently cited Richards as inspiration for his eccentric Sparrow mannerisms.)
McCartney has more acting credits than you may realize, once you consider all of the music films he’s taken part in as a result of The Beatles, from A Hard Day’s Night to Give My Regards to Broad Street. But this is undoubtedly his first swashbuckling action film. The tantalizing details of his role have been kept carefully under wraps, but we’ll keep you posted. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales features Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem, and is currently set to hit theaters in May of 2017. Argghh!
Meanwhile, McCartney hits the road next month for his “One on One” tour. In recent weeks, he’s begun to fill in some of the gaps in his original itinerary with concerts in Minneapolis, Paris and Madrid. The tour kicks off April 13th with his first appearance in Fresno, California. The official announcement notes: “As with the launch of every new Paul McCartney tour, ‘One on One’ promises to unveil a dazzling redesigned set, dozens of classics from the most beloved catalog in popular music, spanning Paul’s entire career – as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course as a Beatle – and no shortage of surprises.” After a break, the tour resumes in Dusseldorf, Germany on May 28th with the classic rock star’s first appearance there since 1972.
