The Monkees are taking a well-deserved victory lap as they celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a terrific new studio album, Good Times! Unfortunately, only two members – Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork – are performing on their tour. At their June 1 concert at New York’s The Town Hall, Mike Nesmith – who’s busy writing a book – joined his mates for one show, even if it was only virtually.
Nesmith wasn’t at the venerable theater on Manhattan’s West 43rd Street. He appeared via Skype to play his song “Papa Gene’s Blues,” from The Monkees’ debut album, to enthusiastic applause.
Afterwards, on his Facebook page, Nesmith wrote: “seemed like it went well — no glitches — and it was a LOT of fun — we’ll try to find another place to do another one.”
Two-plus months later, “another place” became the Golden State Theater in Monterey, CA on Friday night (August 5). After Dolenz and Tork’s set of such hits as “Last Train to Clarksville” and “Daydream Believer,” Nesmith joined them – in-person this time – for their encore. The first was “Circle Sky.”

Nesmith then sang “Papa Gene’s Blues” and “What Am I Doin’ Hangin’ ‘Round?” before Dolenz took over lead vocals as they closed with “I’m A Believer” to enthusiastic applause. Watch for yourself…
In Best Classic Bands‘ Good Times! album review, we wrote: “This whole 13-song affair is exceptionally good and redolent with much of what made The Monkees musically popular back in the day. ‘You Bring The Summer’ sounds like something Brian Wilson would have written back in the day for The Monkees. And if this were, say, 1968, it would be headed for top of the pops on AM radio all summer.”
