For the first time, a member of The Beatles performed on stage with a member of the Grateful Dead. And to make it even more interesting, an NFL star was thrown in the mix.
Paul McCartney’s concert at Boston’s Fenway Park on July 17, 2016, took a little twist when special guest Bob Weir joined him for the encore of the Wings song “Hi Hi Hi” as well as The Beatles classic “Helter Skelter.”
During the latter, New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski also appeared on stage, though Gronk’s performance was relegated to dancing and rocking along on air guitar. (For the record, Macca is approximately 5′ 11″; Gronkowski? 6′ 6″.)
Weir’s project, Dead & Company, had played Fenway Park the previous two nights.
Watch Weir join McCartney for “Hi Hi Hi”…
And “Helter Skelter” with Gronk…
Members of the Fab Four and Dead had long expressed their admiration for each other’s music, with the Dead quite often covering classic Beatles songs in concert. In the 1990s, McCartney released a Grateful Dead-inspired photo film.
Weir is on tour with Wolf Bros. Tickets are available here and here. McCartney continues his Freshen Up tour into 2019. Tickets are available here and here.
Including the two songs collaborations with Weir, McCartney played a career-spanning 39-song show.
