On the final night of Phish’s first-ever destination event in Mexico, guitarist Trey Anastasio gave the impression that the classic rock jam band would mostly be writing and recording this year, taking a much-deserved break from the road for a while. Sounds like members of the group have already had a change of heart, though, as they’ve announced a summer tour, starting in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 22nd and finishing up with three shows in Commerce City, Colorado on September 2-4. In between, the band will headline the Lockn’ Festival in August as well as two nights at Chicago’s Wrigley Field – their debut at a stadium famous for hosting the likes of Billy Joel, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam and others.
As anyone who’s ever attended knows, there’s nothing quite like a Phish show, with their penchant for on-stage improvisation and groovy psychedelic jams, blending funk, progressive rock, folk, country, bluegrass, jazz and pop. Active since 1983, the group continues to sell out big-name places like Madison Square Garden, where they recently played four nights for New Year’s, marking their 32nd performance at the legendary venue since December 1994. Last year was a big one for Phish, from fronting six dates for The Grateful Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” concerts to embarking on their own North American summer tour, and they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
