The Starrs are in alignment – Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band, that is. Since 1989, the former Beatle and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame solo inductee has toured with 12 different variations of the supergroup, offering a rotating roster of rock stars an opportunity to share the spotlight. This summer they’ll be traversing North America with a tour that kicks off June 3rd in Syracuse and finishes up on July 2nd in Los Angeles. Alongside Starr are classic rock stars Todd Rundgren, Santana’s Gregg Rolie, Toto’s Steve Lukather and Mr. Mister’s Richard Page, all of whom are featured on the English musician’s most recent solo album, Postcards From Paradise. Completing the line-up are Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette, who were a part of the All-Starr Band in 2008.
Starr wrote the Beatles songs “Don’t Pass Me By” and “Octopus’s Garden,” and sang lead on “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Yellow Submarine.” As a solo artist, he enjoyed eight Top 10 singles including two #1’s: “You’re Sixteen” and “Photograph.” The popular drummer celebrated his 75th birthday last July 7th with a gathering of family, friends and fans outside the Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood to share a “Peace & Love” salute. (Read Best Classic Bands’ coverage here.) Joining him at his annual birthday salute were guests like Joe Walsh, David Lynch, Edgar Winter and others.
Starr and his wife auctioned off hundreds of their personal possessions on December 4, 2015, many of which are Beatles collectors’ dreams. His 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl three-piece drum kit – used to play early hits like “She Loves You” and “Can’t Buy Me Love” – sold for $2.2 million to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. Irsay is an avid music collector who owns about 30 famous guitars, including instruments played by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton. “Finally, after 45 years, the Beatles are together again,” Irsay quipped in a text message to the Associated Press.
