Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters appeared on CBS This Morning yesterday (9/16) to promote the concert film Roger Waters The Wall which is being screened for one-day only in movie theaters worldwide on Tuesday, September 29th.
The concert portion of the film was shot during Waters’ sold-out 2010-2013 “The Wall Live” tour that celebrated the enormously popular 1979 Pink Floyd album and featured a 500-foot backdrop that is one of the most iconic pieces of rock’n’roll staging – the famed “wall.” The tour was seen by over 1.5 million fans across North America and another two million worldwide.
In the interview with This Morning host Charlie Rose, Waters explains, “I decided I didn’t want to replicate what we’d done in ’79, which was pretty much a personal narrative about me and all my whining. I said we have to make this a more general statement about the state of the world and the need for people to have to cooperate with one another beyond the barriers of faith or politics or rich or poor or whatever those barriers might be.”
So besides the immersive concert experience, it’s also a road movie of Waters’ reckoning with the death of his father in World War II, and a film that highlights the human cost of armed conflict. The theater event will also feature an exclusive conversation with Waters and Floyd drummer Nick Mason.
His father died at 30 when Waters was just an infant. “Every night wherever we are in the world, we have 20 wounded men who come to the show and I meet them at halftime, spend most of the gap talking to them which is always very rewarding,” he says in the interview. “And there was this one guy [who] was a bit older than the rest, standing in the background and just as I was leaving he sort of stood in my way and put his hand out. So I took his hand… and he wouldn’t let go of my hand. I was trying to get back onstage because the second half was about to begin and he looks me in the eye and he said – it affects me even now – ‘your father would be proud of you’. And I just went, ‘Oh my God’. I was really over-emotional walking to the stage.”
