Slowly but surely, tracks from the forthcoming Rolling Stones album Blue & Lonesome are beginning to filter out. The latest is their cover of “Hate To See You Go,” a tune originally recorded by the Chicago blues singer and harmonica giant Little Walter. (Scroll below to watch the video.)
“Hate To See You Go” premiered on BBC2 on October 21 and follows the partial release online of “Just Your Fool,” a song that the Stones premiered live at the Desert Trip festival’s second weekend.
“Hate To See You Go” is one of four Little Walter tracks that appear on Blue & Lonesome. It was the title track of an album released in 1953 on the Checker label (a spinoff of Chess Records) by the Louisiana-born artist, whose birth name was Marion Walter Jacobs.

The Stones’ album also includes covers of blues songs originally recorded by Otis Rush, Jimmy Reed, Magic Sam, Howlin’ Wolf and others. Blue & Lonesome features, of course, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood, with longtime Stones touring bassist Darryl Jones and keyboardist Chuck Leavell contributing, as well as keyboardist Matt Clifford. Eric Clapton, who was recording in an adjacent studio, stopped in during the Stones sessions and guests on the tracks “Everybody Knows About My Good Thing” and “I Can’t Quit You Baby.” The album will be released on December 2.

The Stones were one of six major classic rock bands to perform two consecutive weekends at Desert Trip, but they then canceled a followup show at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas because Mick Jagger has reportedly been battling laryngitis.

Personally, I haven’t been excited by most anything the Stones have done in a few years – nothing new to the music table, so to speak. I’v said for a long while they should address the blues – as in their early years. Now I be excited..,.
