In 2009, the bands joined for the “Can’t Stop Rockin’” Tour and marked the occasion with a single, “Can’t Stop Rockin’,” co-written by Styx’s Tommy Shaw and REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin. In January, Styx and Felder shared the Las Vegas stage for a five-night limited engagement, “Styx & Don Felder: Renegades In The Fast Lane,” at The Venetian Theatre.
Since 1972, Styx has 15 studio albums. From 1977- 1983, the prolific band released five LPs, each a Top 10 best-seller in the U.S. with 1981’s Paradise Theatre reaching #1. They earned eight Top 10 singles including 1974’s “Lady” (#6), 1977’s “Come Sail Away” (#8), the 1979 ballad “Babe” (#1) through 1991’s “Show Me The Way” (#3). Styx has sold a reported 30+ million albums worldwide.
After years of road work and numerous studio albums, REO Speedwagon had a commercial breakthrough with 1980’s Hi Infidelity. The album had four big singles, most notably their #1 “Keep on Loving You” and the #5 hit “Take it on the Run.” Three months after its release, the album also hit #1, remaining there for a remarkable 15 weeks. Their cumulative worldwide album sales are roughly 40 million and they’ve earned four Top 10 singles, including a second #1, “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”
As a member of the Eagles, Felder was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He co-wrote “Hotel California” (with Don Henley and Glenn Frey) and that’s him with Joe Walsh on the song’s famous dual guitar play that ends the song.
In the tour announcement, Cronin said: “I called up Tommy last summer and we were both thinking the same thing: let’s get the boys together, make some music, and have some fun. REO Speedwagon and Styx together is a head first plunge into the fountain of youth, an unstoppable force of nature.”
Shaw added: “Hitting the road with REO and Don Felder is gonna be an unforgettable evening of music for the fans and another chance to hang with these good time friends of ours who love the life as much as we do.”
Felder said: “I’m so excited to be spending the summer on tour with my good friends. It’s going to be a ‘Rocking’ summer filled with hit after hit and tons of fun for everyone.”
