Martin Scorsese’s 1976 feature film, Taxi Driver, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. And its director and many of its prominent cast will be appearing together on April 21 for a special presentation and Q-and-A at New York’s Beacon Theatre, as part of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Scorsese, actors Robert DeNiro, Jodie Foster and Cybill Shepherd, and screenwriter Paul Schrader, will participate in a post-screening conversation, moderated by Kent Jones.
Taxi Driver was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture – it lost to Rocky – Best Actor for DeNiro – who lost to Peter Finch for Network and Best Supporting Actor for Foster. It’s remarkable to think just how young all of the principals were at the time. When it was released, Scorsese was 33, DeNiro 32, Shepherd 26 and Foster just 13. Among the cast’s other prominent members were Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, Peter Boyle and, of course, Scorsese himself.
The film spawned the catchphrase “You talkin’ to me?” which DeNiro’s vigilante character, Travis Bickle, says repeatedly in one memorable scene. Though slighted by the Academy, Taxi Driver has since appeared on many all-time Top 100 films lists.
Tickets aren’t cheap. Prices for the event range from $70 to $355 and are on sale here.
