Genesis fans holding out hope for a reunion will be interested to hear that longtime vocalist-drummer Phil Collins will be performing at a Miami benefit concert on December 12th.
That’s the word as reports are coming from the Little Dreams Foundation, founded by the singer and former wife Orianne, that Collins will perform an “intimate acoustic” show to benefit the foundation, whose mission is to fulfill the dreams of young talents without financial means to achieve their goals.
Update (10/20): You can see from the invite (at left) that Collins will be joined by longtime Genesis concert guitarist Daryl Stuermer and veteran bassist Leland Sklar for the performance.
The Genesis frontman had been scheduled to sing three or four songs at the Little Dreams 2014 benefit but cancelled due to throat issues. This year’s event is at the Fillmore in Miami Beach. Email RM@LDF.CC for ticket info. Best Classic Bands will report anything further as we learn it.
Collins hasn’t performed in public since 2011 when he announced his retirement. He has had other health issues: in 2009, he said that neck surgery prevented him from holding his drumsticks properly.
The last Genesis tour in 2007 reunited Collins with band co-founding members, keyboardist Tony Banks and bassist Mike Rutherford. That core that earned the band its greatest success with numerous platinum albums and hit singles. It was on that tour that Collins says he dislocated some vertebrae in his upper neck that ultimately led to the surgery.
Last year, the trio were joined by original Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel and the band’s guitarist through most of the ’70s, Steve Hackett, for a 2014 BBC documentary Genesis: Together and Apart (released in the U.S. as Sum Of The Parts. Gabriel and Collins overlapped in the band for roughly five years with Collins taking over lead vocals when Gabriel departed in 1975). The collaboration on the documentary fueled speculation of a Genesis reunion involving both Gabriel and Collins.
Collins’ solo catalog is about to receive a significant overhaul from Rhino, beginning in January. (Read Best Classic Bands‘ coverage here.)
