When Best Classic Bands reported on an interview that longtime manager of The Who, Bill Curbishley, did with BBC Radio on January 27 about the band’s 2017 touring plans of the Americas, we watched their itinerary closely. Little did fans know that this would ultimately feature classic rock superstars, Guns N’ Roses, as well as Def Leppard and Aerosmith.
For instance, an announcement on May 18, revealed that a festival called Santiago Rock City will take place at Estadio Monumental in Chile. The Who and Guns N’ Roses will perform on September 29. Aerosmith and Def Leppard play the next night, September 30. (See various Who dates below.)
While discussing The Who’s March and April U.K. dates, Curbishley revealed: “I’m busy putting together North American dates for later in the year for August-September and then—I still can’t believe it—but we’re gonna go down for the first time ever to South America.”
In March, they announced an exclusive Las Vegas residency this summer at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace beginning July 29. (Though the venue has become the home of some of the biggest names in entertainment, The Who are the first rock band to take residency at The Colosseum since the venue opened in 2003.)
Shortly thereafter, The Who announced the first of what are now eight other North American dates (see below). Tickets are on sale here and here.
On March 8, we reported that Rock in Rio, taking place this year over two weekends in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 15-17 and 21-24, had upped the ante for showcasing A-Listers. At that time, the festival added The Who and Guns N’ Roses to an already powerhouse lineup that includes fellow classic rock giants Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper and others.
In that interview with BBC Radio, Curbishley also said: “I know what great audiences they are and it’s going to be fantastic. We’re playing there in September with three shows in Brazil, one in Chile and one in Buenos Aires [Argentina]. We played Mexico City [in between last October’s Desert Trip dates] and it was unreal. I don’t think any of the audiences’ feet touched the floor for two hours.”
Guns N’ Roses have confirmed a October date with The Who in Buenos Aires.

The Who and G N’ R will both perform in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but separately. The Cult open for The Who on September 21; Alice Cooper supports G N’ R on September 26. It appears that other South American dates may also include Aerosmith and Def Leppard. We’ll keep you posted.
Curbishley: “Pete Townshend said to me ‘Now I know why you’ve been pushing us to play South America’ and he was still buzzing for like two weeks after that.”
