If you’re stubbornly clinging to your CD player and mp3s, here’s yet another reason to either dust off your turntable or buy a new one. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers‘ original Greatest Hits collection will finally makes its North American vinyl debut on July 29th.
There’s so much music on the collection that the album will be issued as a double LP, on 180-gram vinyl. The Greatest Hits collection was originally released in 1993 and has sold a whopping 12 million copies.
The album contains 18 Petty classics that he recorded for MCA Records including several from his 1989 solo album, Full Moon Fever. His Top 20 pop singles “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Refugee,” “The Waiting,” “You Got Lucky,” “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin'” are all included, as is his signature song, “American Girl,” which never charted on the Hot 100. Two songs, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” (another Top 20 hit) and a cover of Thunderclap Newman’s “Something In The Air,” were first made available on the CD release.

The collection does not include recordings that Petty has made over the past 20 or so years for Warner Bros. Records such as “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” “Saving Grace,” “Swingin'” and “Flirting With Time.”

The classic rock band has sold more than 80 million records during their 40-year music career. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their debut album in 1976 and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in in 2002, their first year of eligibility. They have achieved the rare distinction of at least one Top 5 album on the Billboard sales charts in five consecutive decades. Their most release release, 2014’s Hypnotic Eye, debuted at #1.
Between the Heartbreakers’ recordings, his solo work and as a member of the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty has won three Grammy Awards and has been honored with many lifetime achievement awards including, Billboard’s Century Award, the MTV Video Vanguard Award and the ASCAP Founders Award. On June 9, he will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The legendary musician’s “other” band, Mudcrutch, just released a new album, 2, and is on a tour of smaller venues. The tour kicked off Northridge, CA on May 24 and wraps up June 30th in San Diego.
