The cast of the 1992 smash comedy film, Wayne’s World, have reunited for a streamed event. The pre-taped presentation, led by the movie’s stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, premiered on December 7 on actor-comedian Josh Gad’s YouTube channel for the kick off of season two of his “Reunited Apart” series. Watch it below.
“Wayne” and “Garth” were joined by many of the original film’s stars including Tia Carrere, Rob Lowe, Ed O’Neill and Ione Skye, director Penelope Spheeris, and others. Also participating in the event were Alice Cooper, who appeared in the film as himself in a supporting role, as well as Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor. May surprised Myers with a revelation about the reaction to the film’s use of the band’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
“You got us back to a new American public,” said the guitarist. “Freddie [Mercury] was very aware of that.” Though Mercury died in November 1991, several months before Wayne’s World‘s February 14, 1992, release date. “You, Mike, got us the video tape and I took it around to Freddie not long before he went. He loved it. He just laughed and laughed, and said, ‘How wonderful is that.'”
Myers had a brief role in the 2018 Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Later, Carvey raved about the legendary car scene where Wayne, Garth and their friends are listening to the iconic Queen song. “When that break kicks in and we syncopate to it, it’s magic.”
The film was born from a series of popular sketches that first ran on Saturday Night Live in 1989. (Myers created the “Wayne” character and used it in his native Canada prior to joining the SNL cast.) When the film arrived in theaters, it was a surprise hit. It was made for a reported $20 million budget and ultimately earned $180 million at the box-office.
The streamed event was introduced by Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who appeared in a 1990 “Wayne’s World” 1990 sketch. When Gad pretended to ask the duo if they had any sway in getting Myers and Carvey to participate, Tyler teased the host. “You brought us, two world famous rock stars on your show to get you in touch with two people we casually know?”
When Wayne and Garth appear… “Way!”
The event was produced on behalf of the First Responders Childrens Fund.
